Voice Over Directors: What Makes a Good Director

I've done many live directed sessions as a voice actor and I've had my fair share of good directors and... "directors".

Let's talk about why it helps to have a good director.

A good director understands what a performance needs and helps create the conditions that enable the right performance.

An experienced director will focus on how to get that result - they will help the performer with context and use techniques to give us something to latch onto.

It makes everyone's life easier because there's less back-and-forth, the studio doesn't have to sift through 20 different takes, and the sessions are actually shorter.

Wouldn't you like to get a better result in less time?

If someone tells me to "smile"... why? Why am I smiling? Who am I smiling to?

All this context matters, and a good director can really help unlock performances that sounded grounded in reality, which is especially important in this day and age.
