Should a voice actor audition for my project?

If you're looking for a voice actor I think it's generally a good idea to get the voice actor to do some sort of short test recording or an audition, just to make sure their performance and voice fit what you had in mind.
The key thing is though, the talent needs to be provided with the right material and context to deliver something that actually matches your specifications.
There's no point just giving them the words and hoping for the best. You'd be better off sending them a demo of theirs you liked as a reference.
The other consideration is the number of people you're involving in the casting. If you really want to search far and wide for a particular voice then an audition is a great way to do it. You can submit in many different places in the hope of finding the right person.
But, if you already have a great established relationship with a handful of voice actors they're more likely to understand you and what you want, which might actually be the best choice.
